This is a new
feature, still under development. Many of the lists are extensive, but
they are still quite selective, and there will be many additions as this feature
evolves. We also realize that there are inevitably some errors in the
listings, as with any such data, which we regret and will correct as any
such mistakes come to our attention.
We appreciate your feedback. Please report any broken links. The purpose of this
feature is simple. We have found over the years that executives often
want to have a sense of what other companies are already in a location, and
to be able to research such firms easily, and perhaps establish contacts to
learn about their experiences before making major investment decisions.
Such research may be performed directly, or through their professional
advisors, but it is a common need for major projects.
For example, when doing labor market analysis of an area,
a location consultant may need to contact leading employers in the area, not
only to become familiar with their past or recent recruitment, retention,
performance, and cost or other HR issues, but also to check whether their
own expansion plans may create labor availability issues for critical
skills.
We are therefore trying to make it easy to come up with
relevant lists of companies for locations all over the world. This
will obviously take time to develop, as the information must be compiled
from many sources, and is a moving target because of company changes.
If you are aware of good sources of such information,
especially for other countries, we welcome suggestions. Good data for
the US market is fairly easy to find. Data for other markets is harder
to obtain.

Please note
that it is not our wish to be a database publisher. Specifically, we
do not intend to include data fields in these lists which could be used for
promotional mailings, email broadcasts, fax broadcasts, telemarketing, etc.
(executive names, titles, phone, fax, email, address). Likewise, we do
not include company descriptions, industry classifications, size, sales, or
any other details. The user must refer to the company website for any
such details, if available. Any organizations which are seeking databases for such
direct marketing or industry research purposes should look elsewhere, as
that is not the purpose of this section. Sources of such databases are
included in the Research section.
We can perform basic company research very rapidly when necessary in support
of project plans for executives, because we use it for our own relationship
development work among many companies.
This section just consolidates very basic and stable,
publicly available information which can easily be found through a wide
variety of sources, such as :
- company name
- ownership (parent or subunit, and nationality of
HQ if known)
- website
- location (city, state, postal code for sorting
purposes, country)
- cross-reference to the local area representative
organization (we add this)
The cross-referencing will take time, as there is no
published source to our knowledge for such information today. In the
absence of cross-references, please note that you can simply switch to the
lists of area representatives for the same region, and look up which ones
are in the same area as a group of companies of interest, or vice versa. |
| The plan is to
organize this information primarily through the local area representatives,
who are generally familiar with all the major employers in their own areas.
This will take time, but should ultimately be more reliable than the initial
reliance upon other published sources. It should share the research
work involved, and keep the data more timely for any changes.
If this feature is perceived to be helpful for your purposes,
please let us know so that we can give appropriate priority to the
research work involved to complete this feature. |
Note that the
international lists are the most incomplete ones at this time, simply as a
matter of research complexity and priorities. For now, they just show
parent companies of US subsidiaries, but this will change as better
information becomes available.
In any case, this helps to show where foreign investors
have been setting up in the US. Over time, we will also have more data
on where US firms have been investing in other countries, as well as where
companies in other countries have been investing around the world. |
Ultimately,
this section is also intended to serve three other purposes associated with
our GUIDE services (Globally Uniform Investment Data & Experience).
- The content should elaborate upon the
GUIDE Area
Profiles by showing the types of major companies which are found in
any participating areas.
- This also fits into the
GUIDE Area Reports,
which provides independently validated factual presentations about areas,
including recent investment activity or other changes (closures,
expansions, etc.). That is analogous to an audited company report,
except that in this case it describes the development of a community.
- Finally, this should support future research work for
GUIDE Experience
Reports, both to select a representative sample of firms to research
and to link such reports to other information about the areas, so that
executives have an even easier tool to provide objective, independent
analysis of the experiences of investors in an area in a way which can be
compared directly to other areas. This can be helpful for new
investment decisions as well as the support of consolidation choices.

Depending upon
the perceived value of these lists among executives, we can also provide
other variations in the future. For example, it may
be helpful to have industry lists, showing where firms have clustered,
perhaps including such information as points on a map for easy
visualization.
We can already research and map such information in the US
when working with executives about specific project plans, but we do not
publish such maps or detailed data on this website.
Please also note that
location consultants frequently work with sophisticated GIS mapping
applications to help visualize a wide variety of data (demographics,
industry clusters, etc.). |
