GUIDE : Globally Uniform Investment Data & Experience

What if it was as easy for companies to identify their alternatives for direct investment projects as it is for financial investors to compare their alternatives in the stock markets, or for shoppers to compare their product alternatives in a retail store or website?  How would that change the flows of investment?

November 12, 2002  -- Two new services which are being launched at the CoreNet Global Summit in San Diego (Nov 16-20) are designed to transform the process by which corporate executives confront the challenge of making decisions about where they do business, such as where to establish, expand, or restructure their operations as markets or plans change.

The first of these is the GUIDE Area Profile, which involves the development of an ongoing working relationship with participating economic development professionals, such as the representatives of areas which are seeking to attract and retain corporate investment projects because of the jobs, capital, technology transfer, tax flows, and other benefits they bring to a community.

The second is SICR (Shared Investor Communications & Research), which similarly involves the development of close working relationships on an independent basis among top executives who are responsible for major investment project decisions.

As Global Direct Investment Solutions performs these two services, it becomes a simple marketplace for connecting the two groups quickly and efficiently to each other on the basis of a growing base of knowledge about both groups.  Timely local knowledge about areas makes it possible to offer creative suggestions of attractive places for specific needs which executives might otherwise overlook.  The knowledge about company needs through ongoing relationships puts individual projects in their strategic perspective and helps to both anticipate needs and make faster and better suggestions in response to specific project requirements.

Although the work is funded by professional service providers and economic development organizations, it is performed as an independent and confidential service.  In other words, it is not the role of GDI Solutions to "push" a particular location to investors.  Instead, the model is to "pull" in the most relevant introductions according to the best available knowledge about the needs of the executives and the capabilities of specific areas to meet those needs.

The GUIDE Area Profile is part of a larger "GUIDE" solution to address the needs of executives at different stages of the typical project planning process.  The Profile involves very basic, "high level" information to help executives determine whether an area seems to be of sufficient potential relevance to their needs to warrant further research effort.  In other words, should the area be on their initial "long list" of places to evaluate for a particular investment project?  Once the "long list" of alternatives can be identified, the executives can "drill down" for more details through other GUIDE services, direct contact with the area representatives, help from relevant professional service providers, or other sources of information and project support.

The GUIDE Area Report service addresses the "data" dimension of the GUIDE process in more detail.  This is analogous to a company report, with a descriptive presentation followed by verifiable facts presented in a consistent format, so that executives can compare one location to another more readily.  This is a new service, and will take some time to develop.

The GUIDE Experience Report addresses the "experience" dimension of the GUIDE process.  In other words, for executives to have high confidence in their investment choices, they need to not only have reliable factual data (as supported by the GUIDE Area Profile and Area Report services), but also reliable evidence of the actual experiences of similar investors in the area.

There is also a feedback process for investors to share their experiences, good or bad, such as to share "lessons learned" and "proven solutions" to typical challenges which might confront other investors.  The referral process also anticipates the needs to deal with project confidentiality issues as well as the professional sharing of knowledge about potential investment projects, such as for area representatives and professional service providers to help executives find the help they need with the assistance of the network of contacts maintained by Global Direct Investment Solutions.  In short, all participants are encouraged to help create a more dynamic and effective marketplace by making more executives aware of these services.

The pre-launch research and marketing work has already identified over 100 potential investment projects, and this number is expected to grow rapidly over the months ahead as executives at thousands of companies are informed about the new service.  Similarly, the pre-launch work has already organized knowledge about thousands of economic development organizations and professional service providers in the direct investment field, as reflected in part by the lists available through the "Participants" section of the website (www.gdi-solutions.com/participants.htm), which identify organizations and websites worldwide.

Over the months ahead, participation in the GUIDE Area Profile and SICR services is expected to grow rapidly so that Global Direct Investment Solutions can continue to grow this base of knowledge and the network of contacts, particularly among leading corporate executives in anticipation of economic recovery and an increase in direct investment activity.

The initial capabilities demonstrated through the website are therefore just part of the plan.  The website isn't intended to be fancy, but it is intended to be a useful tool for executives.  The key to the business, however, is the network of personal relationships among corporate executives and economic development professionals, and in particular the practical knowledge from many years of project support work to quickly and independently introduce executives to relevant professionals according to their interests.

The GUIDE Area Profile work creates the necessary foundation of relationships on the economic development side of the business, while the SICR work develops the relationships among corporate executives.  As both services become well-established, it should be much easier for executives to identify and evaluate their investment alternatives so that major projects can be developed faster and better, with better outcomes for both the companies and the communities in which they choose to reside.
